Position: Therapist
Reports To: The Counseling Services Coordinator
Exempt/Non-Exempt Status: Exempt
Job Summary: The Therapist provides counseling for sexual assault victims/survivors and is under the supervision of the Counseling Services Coordinator. This position may provide any of the following agency clinical services: help survivors manage and overcome mental and emotional issues. Listen to clients and ask questions to help understand their problems including advocating for them and develop strategies to improve their lives. This individual will diagnose, treat and help clients create coping strategies. Will counsel, listen, support and monitor client for progress. The Therapist will work with individuals and groups, and will help provide community resources for clients. This individual is a member of the Focusing Families staff and participates in staff training, in-service, group supervision, and individual supervision.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Helping clients with a variety of issues related to their trauma from sexual abuse
2. Evaluating clients through conversations, interviews and observations to determine correct testing or examination
3. Maintain excellent client records and complete all agency required reports and paperwork.
4. Participate in agency training and in-service.
5. Diagnosing client mental and emotional disorders
6. Working and counseling groups and individual clients.
7. Develops a treatment plan that may include counseling, medication or other services
8. Sets client goals and discusses treatment plan
9. Encouraging, supporting through advocacy, and listening to clients
10. Helping clients discuss experiences and emotions
11. Assisting clients through difficult life changes and challenges
12. Educates clients on strategies and coping skills
13.Accessing client needs and developing strategy to help client
14. Maintains good working relationships with support networks, government resources and community resources
15. Advising and guiding clients through difficult decisions
Requirements:
1. Excellent interpersonal skills with clients, colleagues and community resources
2. Compassionate and caring of clients
3. Thorough knowledge of sexual assault issues.
4. Thorough understanding and experience in the delivery of services to an ethnically and economically diverse and resistant populations.
5. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
6. Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
7. Ability to identify and meet the counseling needs of sexual assault victims/survivors.
8. Flexible schedule with evening availability a must.
9. Proficiency with PCs, databases, and word processing.
10. Dependable transportation
11. Maintain Continuing Education credits as required.
12. Must pass a criminal background check and have a clean driving record.
13. Excellent time management skills, organized and able to prioritize
14. Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with multiple clients
15. Able to organize and manage large amounts of files, schedules, date and information
16. Calm and cool-headed with a positive attitude
17. Self-directed and self-motivated
18. Comfortable with building personal relationships and dedicated to helping others
19. Empathetic and supportive with mentorship and leadership skills
20. Bachelor’s degree in related field; Master’s degree in psychology, clinical mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, social work or a related mental health field from school accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs
21. Hold license to perform in state; licensed by the National Board for Certified Counselors and/or the Association of Marital and Family Therapy, Regulatory Boards or the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners. A Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor will also be considered.
